What is TOLUENE

Toluene is a solvent commonly used to manufacture cosmetic and personal care products, mainly nail polishes and nail polish removers. It is crucial in creating smooth and even textures in nail polish formulations. However, concerns have been raised about its potential health risks, mainly due to its volatile nature and the potential for inhalation exposure.

The harmful effects of toluene primarily arise from inhalation exposure, as it can be released into the air when applying nail products. Inhalation of toluene vapors can lead to various health issues, including headaches, dizziness, nausea, and respiratory irritation. Prolonged or repeated exposure to toluene in high concentrations can have more severe effects, such as damage to the central nervous system. Regulatory agencies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Commission have established guidelines and limits on the use of toluene in cosmetics to minimize potential consumer risks.
